Organisation and conducting of humanist naming ceremonies

A naming ceremony is not just a celebration, but also a deep, meaningful ritual, usually intended for children or babies, and often combined with a first birthday celebration. It is a unique opportunity for all participants not only to celebrate, but also to consciously name their new roles and responsibilities.

ceremony, a berry of truth, personality, and warm emotions.

A naming ceremony offers families an opportunity to reflect on their parenting principles, share their values, and ask for support from loved ones, which will help their child grow up with a strong foundation in life. This ceremony is also intended to solidify the bond with godparents, people who will accompany the child through important life stages. Not sure if a naming ceremony is right for you? Get in touch.

What is a humanist naming ceremony?

This is not a religious, but a secular celebration, during which the child's naming, their arrival into the family and community is celebrated. The ceremony is created individually, taking into account family values, traditions and expectations, and is adorned with family stories, rituals, songs, promises and good wishes.

No, a humanist naming ceremony is not a religious ritual. It does not have sacramental meaning, but it is important symbolically and emotionally for the family.

This completely depends on your capabilities, the child's temperament, the time of year, etc. – you can hold a naming ceremony both in infancy and with an older child. It’s a bit more convenient to plan the time with a baby, the ceremony is cosy and intimate. You can also combine a naming ceremony with the first birthday celebration. Then, there are more ways to involve the child themselves, but it is also harder to keep a child of that age engaged for a longer period. An older child can participate more consciously – hear their name, react. Interactive activities can be included: handprints, drawing, etc.

Yes, they are called godparents or mentors. Or perhaps you can come up with your own term? These are people whom the family chooses to be present on the child's life journey, but without religious obligations. There are no restrictions on how many, or what gender or family ties these people can have. We have had ceremonies where two of the child's aunts were godmothers, and others where everyone present at the celebration took on different commitments.

Officially, a second name is not conferred, but during the ceremony, a second name can be mentioned and honoured, if you have conceived one and wish to use it symbolically, explaining its meaning, where it originates from, or why it is important to your family.

The activities can take place anywhere – at home, in the garden, in nature, at a country house, in a play centre, or another chosen location. The most important thing is that the environment suits the family's wishes and is welcoming to guests.

No, this is an unofficial celebration. No documents or registration with the civil registry are required – the child is usually already given a name when their birth is registered.

The ceremony typically lasts between 30 and 40 minutes, depending on the programme, the number of guests, and the elements included (speeches, music, vows, symbolic actions, etc.).

Ideally, 3–4 months beforehand, so we can select the most suitable celebrant for you and reserve the date, but we are flexible.
