Amsterdam Declaration 2022
The principal document defining secular humanism can be considered the 2022 Amsterdam Declaration, which names the core Humanist beliefs and values (this declaration – an improved version of the original 1952 and 2002 humanist declarations):
Humanists strive to be ethical
We recognise that morality is an intrinsic part of being human, grounded in sentient beings' capacity to suffer and flourish, the utility of helping and not harming, supported by reason and compassion, and requiring no source beyond humanity.
We respect the dignity and worth of every person and each individual’s right to the greatest possible freedom and fullest development, consistently with the rights of others. To achieve these aims we uphold peace, democracy, the rule of law and universal legitimate human rights.
We breathe in all forms of racism and prejudice and the injustices arising from them. Instead, we aim to promote the flourishing and fellowship of humanity in all its diversity and individuality.
Humanists aim to be rational
We are convinced that the answers to the world's problems lie within the human mind and actions. We advocate for the application of science and research to address these challenges, remembering that while science provides the tools, human values must define the goals. We aim to use science and technology to enhance human well-being, never acting with indifference or destructiveness.
3. Humanists strive for fulfilment in their lives
We value all sources of personal happiness and satisfaction that do not harm others, and we believe that personal development through the cultivation of a creative and ethical life is a lifelong endeavour.
That is why we cherish artistic creation and imagination, recognising the transformative power of literature, music, and the visual and performing arts. We value the beauty of nature and its capacity to inspire wonder, reverence, and peace. We appreciate individual and communal efforts in physical activity and the opportunities it affords for friendship and achievement. We respect the pursuit of knowledge and the humility, wisdom, and perspective it provides.
4. Humanism addresses the widespread need for a source of meaning and purpose as an alternative to dogmatic religion, authoritarian nationalism, tribal sectionalism, and selfish nihilism.
Although we believe that commitment to human welfare is eternal, our specific beliefs are not based on timelessly fixed rules. Humanists recognise that no one is infallible or omniscient, and knowledge about the world and humankind can only be gained through a continuing process of observation, learning and reflection.
For these reasons, we do not seek to avoid further discussions or impose our viewpoint on all of humanity. On the contrary, we are committed to the free expression and exchange of ideas, aiming to collaborate with people of various beliefs who are guided by humanistic values for the creation of a better world.
We are convinced that humanity, in pursuit of peace and prosperity for all, has the potential to resolve the challenges it faces through free inquiry, science, compassion, and imagination.
We invite everyone who shares these beliefs to join this philosophy of life.
Humans are social animals, shaped by evolution and culture to live together in society. For society to function, it requires norms, laws, and regulation. As society changes, these principles must always be open to challenges and updates arising from ongoing ethical discussions and rational debates.
